Jim Harbaugh and the Contract Extension

    I was asked my take on the Jim Harbaugh, head coach of the 49ers, situation in regards to what’s unfolding with regards to his contract extension and news that the Cleveland Browns were interested in him, so here’s my take.

    It’s pretty simple what’s going on since this was leaked. Obviously at some point Cleveland and Jim had contact with each other whether it’s Cleveland initiating contact or Jim throwing his name in the pool when Cleveland asked to interview one of the 49ers’ assistants. The 49ers front office were then aware of this, and eventually talks escalated to where what assets could be exchanged. Whether what nixed the deal was monetary (Jim’s asking salary), not enough assets (Cleveland giving up picks), or no interest other than kicking the tires from the 49ers end…well, no one really knows except those involved.

  • I do feel the 49ers made a mistake in even letting Cleveland have some hope in acquiring Jim. Jim is a transcendent coach, and there are those who don’t feel he’s worth more than $5 million. If you’re comparing him to salaries of other head coaches, then one might have an argument. But against anyone, players included, who can make a difference in winning and losing, he is underpaid. He’s getting paid less than our CB Carlos Rogers yet Jim’s value surpasses his and others. A view point like this will never be talked about.

    Obviously with anything, this comes down to power and money; both of which, Jim wants more. Whether the 49ers front office wants to concede that is again rather obvious that they don’t want to pay him more nor do they want to give the head coach more power which could stem from their earlier failure with former head coach Mike Nolan. So one 1 hand, I’d pay Jim more. On the other, I’d leave the personnel decisions to Baalke since this has been working for the team in recent years.

    Expanding on the above, Jim probably sees himself as the next Bill Walsh or Jimmy Johnson; someone who can both be the GM and the head coach. In the history of the league though, there haven’t been many to handle the dual role. Even Mike Holmgren failed when he tried to do this in Seattle. Maybe Jim sees what Pete Carroll with more say in personnel decisions and wants the same.

    Personally, I don’t buy into the whole Jim is a jerk and too brazen is why this situation is happening. The media sensationalizes this. This doesn’t mean he’s not brazen, but it’s a results orientated league which Jim has in spades. He also has the support of the locker room where all the players are buying in. There might be differences between Jim and the FO when it comes to power and money, but IMO it falls more due to money. Matt Maiocco wrote a while ago that the 49ers instead of offering him more money, encouraged him to go for endorsements to make up for the income which is probably why we see him in a number of commercials now. If the 49ers pay him with a good extension, this all goes away. As it is…well, now there’s drama.
